Grackle Behavior
OK, so maybe I am nuts. But after reading Crow Planet I am much more attuned to the goings-on in the corvid world. I think I witnessed a really interesting behavior the other day. I rode my bike up to Central Market at Gateway and I stop and get some breakfast and sit outside and eat it before heading back home. So I see this grackle that looks like it has one leg. I say to myself “poor guy. I’m going to toss him a piece of my veggie calzone.” Upon doing so I notice he has two legs! After he finishes his treat he strikes the pose again and immediately this other grackle drops down and does the same thing! Perfectly mirroring the stance of the other grackle. Neither of them move. Are they competing for my handouts? Are they playing on my sympathies for bird amputees? This must be a learned behavior, yes?
